Qube Corporation, a Chagrin Falls, Ohio manufacturer known for custom plastic enclosures, recently donated material and machine time to help the 103rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry build three custom cabinets for their museum in Sheffield Lake, Ohio.
Qube has spent over 30 years building custom enclosures for electrical and industrial equipment. But this project had nothing to do with NEMA ratings or CPU cabinets — and everything to do with honoring the people who came before us.
The Project: From Raw Oak to Museum-Ready Cabinetry
When the 103rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry (103rd O.V.I.) needed cabinetry for their historic site in Sheffield Lake, they came to Qube with a design already in hand. Qube’s role was to bring it to life.
Here’s how the project came together:
- Material: Qube purchased ¾” oak plywood for the project.
- Fabrication: Qube donated machine time on its CNC equipment to cut the parts to the 103rd O.V.I.’s exact specifications.
- Finishing: The Qube team cleaned and prepped every piece before delivery.
- Result: Three custom cabinets, built to a quality on par with high-end kitchen cabinetry, now serve as functional, good-looking storage for the organization.
“They made three really nice cabinets — like kitchen cabinets, but much nicer,” said William Milliner, President of Qube Corporation, describing the finished pieces built from the group’s own designs.
Who Are the 103rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry?
The 103rd O.V.I. is the oldest Civil War descendant organization in the country that still meets on a regular basis. Members are direct descendants of the original Ohio volunteers from Cuyahoga, Lorain, and Medina counties who served in the 103rd Regiment during the Civil War.
Each year, the group gathers in Sheffield Lake for a week of remembrance, family reunions, and community events, including their well-known pancake breakfasts. Their headquarters includes a museum housed in a former barracks built by regiment members — nicknamed “Elfordilno” — filled with artifacts and photographs tracing the regiment’s history.
The 103rd’s legacy also has a permanent home in downtown Cleveland: several original members of the regiment are named on the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument in Public Square.

Why Qube Got Involved
Qube builds custom enclosures for a living — cutting, fitting, and finishing materials to exact specifications is what the shop does every day. When the 103rd O.V.I. needed help turning their cabinet designs into reality, it was a natural fit for Qube’s equipment and expertise, and a meaningful way to support a piece of local Ohio history.
It’s a small example of how a manufacturing business can put its everyday capabilities — material sourcing, precision cutting, and finishing — toward something outside the usual scope of work, for an organization preserving something worth preserving.
